Your Opportunity for Surgical Weight Loss in Nevada

Weight loss is a personal struggle for close to thirty percent of the population in the United States. Individuals with a BMI of 30 or greater may consider bariatric surgery in order to achieve long-term success.

In choosing your bariatric surgeon, not only should they be experienced, but they should be comfortable with educating you on the benefits and risks of surgery.

Dr. Mustafa Ahmed spent many years in critical care, treating patients who ultimately suffered from obesity, which put them at high risk for life-threatening diseases. He found that he could treat their immediate health needs but not the root of their problem, which was obesity.

Southern Nevada Bariatrics came to life because of his true concern for his patients’ health. He decided he had to try to make a difference.

Getting Ready for Bariatric Surgery

The amount of time it takes to prepare for your bariatric surgery varies based on a number of things. The primary piece is your current health and the medical conditions you deal with daily. Other considerations are your age, the procedure you have chosen and if your insurance has any specific requirements, like a documented pre-surgery weight loss attempt.

Southern Nevada Bariatrics will help you navigate the process and help you approach the surgery in a positive way. It can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months, but that time is valuable and worthwhile to you.

Modifying Your Behavior and Lifestyle

Your relationship to food must change and exercise and physical activity to your daily life must be added in order to keep you moving forward after surgery.

Dr. Ahmed likes his patients to understand that the surgery is not a “magic wand,” but that it is a great place for a reset of your former decisions and actions toward food and health.

With every pound that comes off, you will feel more and more empowered in your journey to a healthier version of yourself.

The surgery is the tool, but you are the operator! That cannot be stressed enough. Dr. Ahmed encourages you to journal and learn about yourself and to document the changes you are experiencing. Pinpointing and identifying struggles will help you get around them while you stay focused and on-track.

Is Your Kitchen Ready

Once you have your first visit to Southern Nevada Bariatrics, you will also have a nutrition evaluation at the beginning of your journey. While many of the changes are common to bariatric surgery patients, there are things that need to be addressed for your personal lifestyle.

Before surgery, we will encourage you to go through your pantry and refrigerator and remove or re-gift food items that you will not be eating after surgery. Removing the temptation initially helps you to “set” your new eating habits. High calorie, processed or foods high in carbohydrates and sugar, as well as sodium foods, should be eliminated.

Dr. Ahmed and his team will encourage you each step of the way. You will learn to read the nutrition labels and you will be encouraged to shop fresh food choices that are usually on the outer, exterior walls. Fresh meat, produce and dairy will be your primary focus. Staying away from packaged foods, breads, snacks, and goodies are going to be key to your success.
