A hiatal hernia is a condition in which the upper stomach bulges through a gap in a weakened diaphragm. It can cause considerable discomfort and is one of the most common reasons patients develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Most adults acquire it later in life, and older patients are at higher risk due to increased muscle weakness and loss of tissue flexibility.
Dr. Mustafa Ahmed performs standalone hiatal hernia surgery, or in conjunction with a bariatric procedure such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. To book a consultation, call Southern Nevada Bariatrics or complete a patient inquiry form.
Many people have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, the major signs are:

Not every hiatal hernia needs surgery. Repair is particularly important when there are symptoms of discomfort with a type II hernia, or a type I hernia where regurgitation persists despite treatment. Serious issues such as digestive obstruction or abnormal rotation of the stomach must be addressed surgically. Surgery is generally not recommended for asymptomatic type I hernias.
Where appropriate, bariatric surgery such as sleeve gastrectomy can be combined with hiatal hernia repair, safely performed at the same time. If you have a BMI over 40, or over 35 with an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, speak to Dr. Ahmed about a combination surgery.
At your consultation, Dr. Ahmed will discuss your medical history, diet, current medications, and symptoms, with particular attention to the frequency and intensity of heartburn and reflux. He’ll perform the necessary tests and draw up a treatment plan for hiatal hernia repair.
“Ceci and Dr Ahmed are amazing! Dr Ahmed explained the pros and cons of the surgery very thoroughly. He’s a no nonsense doctor which I can appreciate. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and encourages better health. I’m so happy I choose them. Best decision I’ve made.”
In many cases a hiatal hernia presents with no symptoms. However, if you have severe heartburn, regurgitation, and acid reflux, speak to your doctor and arrange testing.
There are several approaches to hiatal hernia surgery. On average, the surgery lasts between two and three hours.
